Restoring the health of Avoca Lagoon

Avoca Lagoon looking North

Most Avocans will be aware that Avoca Lagoon has scored poorly in the many annual reports monitoring its ecological health and suitability for swimming.

The reasons for this have been discussed in articles in a number of issues of our community newsletter – see, for example, the June 2024 issue. Those articles also covered actions taken by Central Coast Council to partially address the problems.

Council is well advanced with framing a 10-year action plan to better manage the 4 coastal lagoons in our area, including Avoca Lagoon. An initial draft set of Action Options has been developed. That has been done in concert with lagoons community representatives (including from Avoca Beach and North Avoca).

This draft set of Action Options can be found here. (See under Stage 3 – Management Actions.) Some Actions apply to all Lagoons (Options 1-13) and some to individual Lagoons (16-19 for Avoca Lagoon).

During October Council is undertaking an initial stage of broad community consultation on these draft Management Actions. You can contribute your views via two avenues:

· By completing a survey on Council’s Coastal Lagoons website

· Attending one of the 4 Lagoons drop-in sessions being run by Council. The session at Avoca Lagoon will take place on Tuesday 21 October from 2 to 6 pm at the Jack Muller picnic area – 1 Ficus Avenue (next to the Lagoon entrance).

A more substantial consultation process will happen in early 2026 once Council has approved public exhibition of a full draft of the Coastal Management Program for the Coastal Lagoons.

Avoca Lagoon

Avoca Lagoon is a precious jewel for our community. So, please contribute your views on the proposed draft Actions. This is important in marshalling effective and supported efforts to improve its environmental health and suitability for swimming and other recreation.
